Orange Faces Top Teams at Clemson Invite

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's rowing team will head south for its second race of the spring season at the Clemson Invite in Clemson, S.C. Racing begins on Saturday morning on Lake Hartwell and will conclude on Sunday morning.
Â
"One of the neat things about the Clemson Invite is it is the largest rowing event in the United States that involves top-20 women's teams," head coach Justin Moore stated. "There are 20 teams there, almost all of them are ranked in the top 20. The competition is extremely good."
Â
In the latest release of the CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll, nine programs currently ranked in the top 20 are racing at Clemson this weekend. In addition, five teams at the Clemson Invite are currently receiving votes in the coaches' poll, but not ranked in the top 20. Syracuse collected the most votes among teams not ranked in the top 20.
Â
Racing will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning and will run until 10 a.m. Competition will pick up at night with second session slated to run from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The Clemson Invite will come to a close on Sunday morning with racing from 8-10 a.m. Video of the competition will be available on clemstontigers.com.
Â
"The women get six boat racing, which is champion-level racing," added Moore. "We head down there and race Saturday morning six boats, Saturday afternoon six boats, and Sunday morning six boats. It's a completely different experience, very much a championship-level experience for the women."
Â
The varsity eight boat will race for the first time in the spring at Lake Hartwell. Varsity eight competition was cancelled at the Nordic Nine due to darkness on the first day of racing and could not be completed on the second day due to weather and course conditions.
Â
"It is very exciting," commented Moore. "We would have loved to get on the water in Cornell, but conditions didn't allow for it. They have been showing a lot of speed in their prognostics. I'm pretty excited. I know they are excited to line up against someone else. Racing another crew is really what it is all about."
