First varsity eight placed second in third level final
WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 16 Syracuse University men's rowing team competed in its conference championship, the Eastern Association of Rowing College (EARC) Men's Sprints, on Sunday on Lake Quinsigamond. Syracuse's first varsity crew placed second in the third level final of the 70th Eastern Sprints.
"We struggled with consistency today," head coach Dave Reischman said. "All of our crews struggled in the morning heats and raced much better in the afternoon. You can't afford to be inconsistent in our league. Now, we will have to wait and see if the IRA committee thinks we have done enough to warrant an invitation to the national championship."
Â
Syracuse deployed four boats at the Eastern Sprints, which included morning preliminary heats and afternoon finals. The Orange's first varsity eight crew placed 14th overall, matching its finish from last season. In the second varsity eight competition, Syracuse finished 13th overall. The third varsity eight finished 11th overall, while the varsity four boat was second.
Â
In the first varsity eight, Syracuse finished in fifth place in its morning heat, covering the course in 5:49.321. The Orange came into the third level final with the third best morning heat time of the group and finished in second place behind Holy Cross. Syracuse finished its final race in 5:47.419.
Â
The second varsity crew placed fifth in its morning heat, registering a time of 5:54.117. The Orange won the third level final, easily defeating George Washington by 5.653 seconds. Syracuse covered the course in 5:56.447.
Â
The third varsity eight boat placed fourth in its race in the morning, finishing in 5:57.969. In the petite final, the Orange placed fifth, recording a time of 6:02.195.
Syracuse did not qualify for one of the nine automatic bids to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championship Regatta on Sunday at the Eastern Sprints and will await its postseason fate. Selections and seeding for the IRA Regatta will be announced on Tuesday.
