SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 1 Syracuse (12-2) hosts No. 20 Marist (14-3) in the opening round of the 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship on Sunday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. inside the Carrier Dome. The game marks the first-ever meeting between the Orange and the Red Foxes.
The Orange is the No. 2 seed and received the Atlantic Coast Conference's automatic bid into the tournament field. Marist is making its second NCAA appearance, and first since 2005. The Red Foxes are champions of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and received the league's automatic NCAA berth. On Wednesday, Marist defeated Bryant, 10-6, in an NCAA play-in game to set up Sunday's date with the Orange.
FAMILIAR TERRITORY
This is SU'S 35th trip to the postseason, the fourth-most NCAA appearances by a Division I program. The Orange enters the 2015 tournament with a 65-23 postseason record. Its 65 tournament victories are the second-most behind Johns Hopkins (68). The Orange has the most NCAA titles (11) of any Division I program and has reached the NCAA championship game 17 times.
NO. 2 SEED SUITS ORANGE WELLÂ
This is the ninth time overall Syracuse has been seeded second in the NCAA Tournament. The Orange owns a 15-5 all-time record when serving as the No. 2 seed, including winning the 1983, 2002 and 2009 national championships.
DESKO OWNS HIGHEST TOURNAMENT WINNING PERCENTAGE
Head coach John Desko took over the program in 1999 and has guided the Orange to 16 NCAA Tournaments in 17 seasons and five NCAA titles (2000, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2009). Desko's clubs are 31-10 in the NCAA playoffs, good for a .756 winning percentage. That mark is the best among all head coaches that have coached at least 10 NCAA games. Legendary Johns Hopkins mentor Henry Ciccarone is second with a .750 (18-6) winning percentage.
NCAA DOME-INATION
The Orange holds a 25-3 (.893) record in NCAA playoff games held at the Carrier Dome. Its only three Dome postseason losses came in the 1991 (North Carolina), 2010 (Army) and 2014 (Bryant).
RETURN OF THE MAAC
Sunday's game marks the fourth time since 2008 Syracuse has hosted the MAAC champion in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Orange is 3-0 in those previous games, beating Canisius once (2008) and Siena twice (2009, 2011).
GALASSO SCORES 30 FOR FIRST TIME
Nicky Galasso has 32 goals this season, the first time in his career he has reached the 30-goal mark. Galasso is tied for seventh in the ACC and first among midfielders in goals per game (2.29). Duke's Myles Jones is also averaging 2.29 goals per contest. In the last six games, Galasso has 17 goals (2.8 per game), including five hat tricks.Â
Galasso is the sixth SU middie in the last 20 years to score 30 goals, and he's just the fourth to do it while spending almost no time as an attackman. The other three are Luke Cometti (2012), Casey Powell (1996) and Roy Colsey (1995).
SCOUTING MARIST
The Red Foxes have won nine straight games, including Wednesday's play-in victory against Bryant.Â
Marist leads the MAAC in nearly every statistical category, including scoring offense (12.0), scoring margin (+4.06), shooting percentage (.322) assists per game (7.18), ground balls per game (29.8) and fewest turnovers per game (12.94).
The offense is led by the attack duo of Joseph Radin and J.D. Recor. Both players have 68 points. Radin leads the team with 51 goals and Recor has a squad-best 40 assists.
Overall, five Marist players have at least 20 goals. In addition to Radin and Recor (28), attackman Colin Joka (40), midfielder Michael Begley (26) and midfielder Drew Nesmith (27) have hit that mark.
Goalie Dave Scarcello has started every game. He holds a 7.79 goals-against average with 185 saves. Scarcello was the named the MAAC Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. He had 14 saves Wednesday against Bryant.
Head coach Keegan Wilkinson is a 2006 graduate of St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. He took the Marist head coaching reins in 2012 and has guided the club to a 36-24 record.
