Syracuse gets Championships action underway
Four members of the Orange earned All-America honors and a fifth was tabbed as an honorable mention on the first night of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The first event for the Orange was the 110-meter hurdles, where Freddie Crittenden and Donald Pollitt each missed advancing to Friday's final by 0.02 seconds, and earned Second Team All-America honors.
Crittenden finished fifth in the first heat with a personal-best time of 13.63 seconds. He posted the ninth-fastest overall time in the event, with the top-eight advancing.
Pollitt narrowly missed the automatic bid to the final in the third heat, by finishing third (13.68), also nudged by under 0.02 seconds for the final spot by LSU's Joshua Thompson. Pollitt's second-team honors marked his second All-America selection after earning first-team honors in 2013 after a sixth-place finish.
Â
Pollitt is the first two-time outdoor All-America for the Orange since Kyle Heath picked up his second honor in 2008 in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
Â
Syracuse then had a trio of runners in the men's 10,000-meters, the largest contingent of any school in the race and second-largest of any men's program in any event at the Championships.
Â
Martin Hehir led the way by taking 13th in a time of 29:47.29. His Second Team All-America honors marked the third All-America selection of the year for the Washingtonville, N.Y. native after he earned the honor in cross country and the 3,000-meters in the indoor season.
Hehir was followed closely by teammate Dan Lennon, who took 15th (29:55.69) and also earned Second Team All-America honors.
Â
Max Straneva finished 18th (30:06.94), which was good for honorable mention.
Margo Malone will continue the action for the Orange in Thursday's women's 10,000-meter final, which is set for 9:38 p.m. on ESPN.
