
Incoming Rower on Canada Junior National Team

Tavares will row at the 2015 World Rowing Junior Championships
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Incoming Syracuse University men's rower Nick Tavares has been named to the Canadian junior national team, Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) announced on Tuesday. Tavares and the Canada junior national team will participate in the 2015 World Rowing Junior Championship from Aug. 5-9 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Tavares will be a part of the Canadian junior men's quadruple scull heading into the World Rowing Junior Championships in Brazil. The Fonthill, Ontario native participated in the 2014 World Rowing Junior Championships in Hambury, Germany, helping the Canadian double scull to an 18th-place showing.

The incoming Syracuse rower certainly has had his fair share of success at the high school level. In each of the past three years, he has competed at the Stotesbury Cup, the world's largest high school regatta. As a sophomore and junior, he finished in first place in the junior boys' quad. In his final high school season, Tavares finished in second place in the boys' single, .34 seconds behind the winner.

In addition, he placed second in the senior boys' single at the 2014 Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association (CSSRA) Regatta. In 2015, he finished in first place in the senior boys' double and recorded a fifth-place showing in the senior boys' single.

The World Rowing Junior Championships will take place on the same course that will be utilized for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Prior to its trip to Rio de Janeiro, the team will prepare at the CanAmMex regatta from July 6-11 in Mexico City.
