SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's basketball team picked up its first ACC win of the season, defeating Boston College 62-40 on Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome, thanks in part to 47.8% shooting (22-46) from the field and four Orange registering double-digit points.
Syracuse (11-7, 1-4) converted 22 points off of Boston College turnovers, while allowing the Eagles (7-9, 0-3) just eight points off of Syracuse errors.
Freshman Malachi Richardson led both squads in scoring on the night, tallying 15 points while going 6-6 from the charity stripe.
Grad student Michael Gbinije added 14 points, six rebounds, and four steals, while senior DaJuan Coleman posted 11 points. Junior Tyler Roberson completed his third double-double of the season, grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds while racking up 10 points.
The Orange and the Eagles struggled back and forth with each other in the opening 10 minutes, until an old-fashioned 3-point play by Roberson put Syracuse up 14-11 at the 8:42 mark. Syracuse continued on a 14-0 run heading into the final three minutes of the first half, posting a 23-11 advantage.
A bucket by Boston College cut the Syracuse run, but the Orange proceeded to go on another 7-0 run to cap off the first half.
Heading into the locker rooms with a 30-15 lead, the Orange outscored the Eagles 21-4 in the last 10 minutes of the half. Syracuse outrebounded Boston College 21-12 and held the Eagles to 5-22 (22.7%) from the field in the first 20 minutes of play.
Nine unanswered points by the Eagles highlighted the opening minutes of the second half, cutting the Syracuse lead down to seven at the 13:56 mark, 35-28. That's as close as the Eagles would get, however, as a dunk by Coleman snapped the run and helped the Orange venture on an 11-0 run of its own. A three from Richardson highlighted the run, forcing a Boston College timeout with 8:49 left to play, 46-30.
The Orange continued to surge, extending its advantage to 25 and its largest lead of the game off of a jumper and a free throw from Coleman, 60-35 with just over two minutes left in the contest. Another pair of free throws from Coleman sealed 62-40 victory for the Orange.
Syracuse will play three straight road games, beginning Saturday, Jan. 16 at Wake Forest at noon.
