ROCHESTER, N.Y.- Despite the Syracuse women's ice hockey team outshooting RIT 42-18 on Friday night, the Orange lost to the Tigers in overtime by a final score of 2-1 in College Hockey America play at the Gene Polisseni Center. Both teams will play again on Saturday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion at 7 p.m.
Â
Syracuse (10-12-3, 6-3-2) outshot RIT (6-18-1, 2-8-1 CHA) in every period except for overtime, in which the Tigers only took one shot and scored. RIT goaltender Jetta Rackleff was the difference maker in the contest, turning aside 41 shots while allowing only one Orange goal.
Â
Senior Nicole Ferrara scored the lone goal on a power play for Syracuse in the second frame. After a scrum in front of the net, Ferrara eventually got her stick on the puck to bury a shot past Rackleff, giving the Orange a 1-0 lead at the 13:18 mark in the second. The goal for Ferrara was her team-leading 12th goal of the season, which ranks second among players in the CHA.
Â
Despite a 1-0 advantage and a shot-heavy performance by the Orange, Syracuse was unable to score for the remainder of the contest. RIT eventually tied the game up at 1 with only 15 seconds left in the second, as Carly Payerl beat senior netminder Jenn Gilligan for the first of her two goals.
Â
Payerl scored the game-winning goal one minute into overtime by going top shelf on a shot that just made it over Gilligan's right shoulder. Payerl's two goals to go along with Rackleff's 41 saves paved the way for RIT.
Â
Gilligan finished the contest with 16 saves, giving up two even-strength goals to the Tigers.
The Orange had numerous opportunites to take a third-period lead, but were unable to capitalize. Junior Larissa Martyniuk ringed a slapshot off the post and sophomore Emily Costales nearly put the puck over the red line that would have won the game.Â
Â
Both teams will play again tomorrow night for their final regular season game against each other. The contest will take place back home at Syracuse at Tennity Ice Pavilion at 7 p.m. Both live video and live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
