SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse women's ice hockey team plays College Hockey America rival RIT this weekend in a two-game series, traveling to Rochester on Friday night for a 7 p.m. start before returning home on Saturday to face off against the Tigers at 7 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Syracuse (10-11-3, 6-2-2 CHA) is coming off a series split with Mercyhurst, shutting out the Lakers 2-0 on Friday, Jan. 15 before falling by a final score of 3-1 the following day. After the loss on Saturday, the Orange currently resides in second place in the conference with 14 points, which is two points behind Mercyhurst. RIT (5-18-1, 1-8-1) won its first conference game over the weekend, splitting a CHA series with Penn State. The Tigers defeated the Nittany Lions 3-0 on Friday before losing 3-2 in overtime on Saturday. RIT is currently in last place in the CHA standings and looking to gain some ground this weekend against the Orange.
Senior Nicole Ferrara will look to extend her point streak up to four games on Friday. The captain leads Syracuse and is tied for second in the CHA with 11 goals this season. Senior Melissa Piacentini and sophomore Steph Grossi are tied for second in the conference with 24 points.
The Rivalry Continues
The Orange have already defeated the Tigers twice this season by the final score of 7-1 and 5-1.
In the first game between the two this season, sophomore Stephanie Grossi tied the single-game scoring record for Syracuse by recording five points that included three goals and two assists.
In the 5-1 win for Syracuse, junior Jessica Sibley finished with three points, including two goals and an assist. Freshman Allie Munroe scored the first goal of her collegiate career while also dishing out an assist. Senior Nicole Renault finished with two assists in the win.
Scouting RIT
Reagan Rust leads the Tigers with 15 points this season that includes five goals and a teamhigh 10 assists. The Tigers then have two players with 12 points a piece and two players with 11 points each.
Carly Payerl leads RIT with six goals in 24 games this season. Jess Paton has five goals and seven assists for 12 points.
The Tigers have utilized three different goaltenders in between the pipes. Brooke Stoddart has spent the most time in the crease, playing over 613 minutes with an overall record of 3-7-0. Jenna de Jonge is 1-6-0 while Jetta Rackleff is 1-5-1. Rackleff started the past six games.
Costales, Gilligan Garner CHA Player of the Week HonorsÂ
After a successful week on the ice for the Syracuse women's ice hockey team, sophomore Emily Costales was named College Hockey America Player of the Week while senior Jenn Gilligan was chosen as Goaltender of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
Costales and Gilligan led Syracuse to a 2-1 record over the week. Costales started off the week by dishing out a career-high two assists in a 4-0 win over Union. Costales then guided the Orange to a crucial 2-0 win over Mercyhurst on Friday afternoon by scoring a third period goal that iced the game for Syracuse.
Gilligan shut out her opponents in two of the three games over the week. The senior netminder started the week with a 20-save shutout of Union as the Orange cruised to a 4-0 win. Gilligan then made 16 big saves to hold Mercyhurst scoreless on Friday, delivering a 2-0 CHA win for the Orange.
