Syracuse records its fifth win in conference play
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior guard Cornelia Fondren sank a free throw with less than three seconds remaining in regulation to seal a 62-61 victory for the RV/RV Syracuse University women's basketball team against Boston College on Wednesday night in the Carrier Dome.
Â
"I'm just really happy for our kids," head coach Quentin Hillsman stated. "Even though we had two tough games, losing at Notre Dame and losing to Louisville at home, and came back on one day's rest, it was just tremendous by our players. What can I say, we just turned around, came out, and played really hard tonight."
Â
With the game tied with seconds remaining, Boston College freshman center Mariella Fasoula attempted a lay-up for the lead. Junior center Briana Day sent it back and grabbed the defensive rebound to set up the decisive play.
Â
Boston College (13-7, 1-6) came out firing on Wednesday and took an 18-5 lead with 4:01 remaining in the opening quarter. Syracuse (15-6, 5-3) used a 10-0 run in the second quarter to take its first lead of the game. The Orange would hold onto that lead until the Eagles' late charge in the fourth quarter.
Â
Back-to-back lay-ups from Fasoula gave the Eagles a 59-58 edge with 3:31 remaining in regulation. On the very next possession, Syracuse redshirt junior guard Brittney Sykes made an old-fashioned 3-point play to put the Orange back ahead, 61-59. Fasoula converted another lay-up to tie it with 1:49 remaining to set the scene for the wild finish.
Â
Senior guard Brianna Butler finished with a team-high 22 points on the night, matching her season-best scoring effort. The King of Prussia, Pa. product had 20 points in the opening half. In the process, she passed Martha Mogish for sixth place on the program's all-time scoring list. Butler has scored 1,418 points in her collegiate career.
Â
Sykes tallied 13 points against Boston College. With her second basket of the game, Sykes became the 25th player in program history to score 1,000 career points. The Newark, N.J. native has notched 1,009 points in her career, which ranks 24th in Orange history.
Â
Syracuse will meet No. 17/17 Miami in its next contest on Monday night. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Fla. The game will be broadcast on the Regional Sports Networks and ESPN3.
