In its last game, Syracuse snapped a two-game losing streak with a 62-61 victory against Boston College on Jan. 27. Senior guard Cornelia Fondren sealed the victory with a free throw with less than three seconds remaining. Classmate Brianna Butler paced the squad with a season-best 22 points.
Â
Miami enters Monday's game with a 17-3 overall mark and 5-2 record in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Hurricanes were ranked No. 17 in the country in the latest releases of the two major national polls. Miami is coming off a 57-45 win against Virginia Tech on Jan. 28.
Â
Success Against the Best
Under head coach Quentin Hillsman, the Orange have defeated at least one opponent ranked in the top 25 of the Associated Press Poll every season since 2007-08. Syracuse's last victory against a nationally-ranked foe was an 86-50 win against No. 12/12 Duke on Jan. 5.
Â
Syracuse has knocked off the No. 6 team in the nation twice during Hillsman's tenure. Those two wins mark the highest-ranked foes the Orange have beaten under Hillsman. SU defeated No. 6/6 Ohio State, 75-66, in 2010 and No. 6/6 North Carolina, 78-73, in 2014.
Â
The Orange defeated No. 2/2 Connecticut, 62-59, at Manley Field House on Jan. 2, 1996. To date, that marks the highest-ranked opponent Syracuse has defeated in program history.
Â
Last Time Out
Senior guard Cornelia Fondren sank a free throw with less than three seconds remaining in regulation to seal a 62-61 victory for Syracuse team against Boston College on Jan. 27 in the Carrier Dome.
Â
With the game tied with seconds remaining, Boston College freshman center Mariella Fasoula attempted a lay-up for the lead. Junior center Briana Day sent it back and grabbed the defensive rebound to set up the decisive play.
Â
Boston College came out firing and took an 18-5 lead with 4:01 remaining in the opening quarter. Syracuse used a 10-0 run in the second quarter to take its first lead of the game. The Orange would hold onto that lead until the Eagles' late charge in the fourth quarter.
Â
Back-to-back lay-ups from Fasoula gave the Eagles a 59-58 edge with 3:31 remaining in regulation. On the very next possession, Syracuse redshirt junior guard Brittney Sykes made an old-fashioned 3-point play to put the Orange back ahead, 61-59. Fasoula converted another lay-up to tie it with 1:49 remaining to set the scene for the wild finish.
