SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse women's tennis team defeated Liberty in all six singles matches on Saturday afternoon, beating the Flames by a final score of 6-1 at Drumlins Country Club. The Orange are back in action at home tomorrow at 11 a.m. against Cornell.
Â
Despite Syracuse (2-0) losing two-of-three games in doubles, the Orange bounced back to sweep Liberty (1-3) in every singles match to pick up six points and the win.
"Bouncing back with a sweep of the singles matches showed the character of this team," head coach Younes Limam said. "We are looking forward to tomorrow's challenge against Cornell."
Â
The freshmen tandem of Dina Hegab and Gabriela Knutson continued to impress in their second day of collegiate action, picking up a doubles win before also winning each of their singles contests.
Â
Graduate student Anna Shkudun got things started for the Orange in singles play, taking down Belen Rivera 6-0, 6-1 in a dominant showing. Hegab was the next to finish, beating Mariely Hassey 6-1, 6-0 to pick up her second college victory in two days. Like Hegab, Knutson also won for the second consecutive day, defeating Maria Khval 6-3, 6-3.
Â
Junior Nicole Mitchell was also successful in singles play, beating Aleksandra Panchenko 6-4, 6-2 in her first singles action of the season. Freshmen Libi Mesh and Maria Tritou closed out singles play with their first collegiate victories. Mesh defeated Evangeline Crist 6-1, 6-2 while Tritou took down Anna Dollar 6-1, 6-4.
Â
Hegab and Knutson were the only Syracuse pair to win in doubles play by beating Dollar and Khval 6-3. Shkudun and junior Valeria Salazar played in an exciting match, but were unable to come away with the victory, losing 7-6 (7-2) in a tiebreaker. Panchenko and Anderson succeeded in beating Mitchell and Tritou 7-5.
Â
The Orange will look to stay unbeaten tomorrow when the team takes on Cornell for its third home contest of the weekend at 11 a.m. Live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
