One year ago this weekend, Justyn Knight (3:59.51) and Martin Hehir (3:59.81) turned in the first-two sub-four minute miles in program history at the Penn State National. However, Knight was competing as unattached so it was Hehir's record on the books for the Orange. On Saturday at the Boston Terrier Invitational – Knight's indoor debut for Syracuse - three Orange student-athletes broke the 3:59 mark.
Led by Knight, who completed the race in a school-record time of 3:56.87, which is also the fastest time in the nation to date this year, all-three bested the previous school record in the event. Knight was followed closely by teammate Adam Palamar, who was the second-fastest collegian with a time of 3:58.55. Palamar's time will serve as the third-fastest in the nation to date. Joel Hubbard also turned in his first sub-four minute mile in 3:58.94, which was good for fourth among collegiate competitors.
Joe Kush (4:09.87/25th) and Nick Ryan (4:11.75/31st) also competed in the event.
The distance success continued into the 3k and 5k for the men. Colin Bennie was the top collegiate finisher in the 3000-meters in 7:54.59, just ahead of Martin Hehir, who competed unattached having finished his eligibility. Hehir crossed the line in 7:56.75. Mickey Burke also competed in the event, qualifying for the ACC Championships in 8:11.51.
The Orange sprinters turned in stellar performances at the site where Hehir set the mile record last season at the Penn State National.
The 60-meter dash finals were all-Orange, with six of the eight competitors having Syracuse ties. For the third time this season, Freddie Crittenden III won the event for Syracuse, turning in a time of 7.76 in the final. Crittenden's semifinal time of 7.73 seconds is just two hundredths of a second behind his season-best time of 7.71, which is currently the NCAA's fourth-fastest time. Behind Crittenden finished Orange alums Donald Pollitt (7.79 seconds/2nd), and Ramon Sosa (7.91 seconds/4th) and current 'Cuse sprinters David Gilstrap (7.99 seconds/5th), Richard Floyd (8.09 seconds/6th) and Chevis Armstead II (8.11 seconds/7th).
