SYRACUSE, N.Y.-Â The Syracuse women's ice hockey team is back in action tonight after a 25-day hiatus over winter break, returning to Tennity Ice Pavilion to take on No. 10Â Colgate tonight at 7 p.m.
Syracuse (8-10-2) played its last game on December 10, losing to undefeated top-ranked Boston College by a final score of 7-2. Senior Melissa Piacentini registered two goals in the loss while freshman Maddi Welch made a career-high 23 saves in between the pipes.
Colgate enters Monday night on a three-game winning streak that includes victories over St. Lawrence, No. 5 Clarkson and Mercyhurst. The Red Raiders last game was on Dec. 5 when the team took down St. Lawrence by a final score of 2-1.Â
Both sides already played a game against each other this season, as Colgate came away with a 2-1 win. Sophomore Megan Quinn scored late for the Orange but it was not enough. Senior Jenn Gilligan made 15 saves in net while Colgate netminder Julia Vandyk secured 35 saves.
Scouting Colgate
The Red Raiders moved into the top 10 after taking down the Orange on Nov. 20 by a final score of 2-1.Â
Bailey Larson leads Colgate with 18 points this season that includes seven goal and a teamhigh 11 assists. Alongside Larson, the Red Raiders have five players with either 12 or 13 points and three more with 10 points.
Jessie Eldridge and Shae Labbe are tied among the team lead with eight goals each. Thus far this season, Colgate is outscoring its opponents 3.1 to 2.1 each game.
Ashlynne Rando and Vandyk have split majority of the time between the pipes this season. Rando has started in 11 games, registering a .915 save percentage to go with a 2.23 goals against average. Vandyk is 6-0-1 in net with a .939 save percentage and 1.69 goals against average.
Orange Back For The New Year
The Orange currently resides in second place in the CHA with a 5-1-2 conference record. Mercyhurst is two points ahead of Syracuse with a 6-0-2 CHA record. Both sides will face off Jan. 15th and 16th at War Memorial Arena.
Three of the top five point leaders in the CHA belong to the Orange. Both Stephanie Grossi and Melissa Piacentini are tied for second place with 22 total points. Jessica Sibley sits in fifth place with 19 points.
