SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Sergio Camargo scored an unassisted goal in the 64th minute to give No. 10 Syracuse a 1-0 victory against No. 15 Virginia Tech on Friday, Oct. 14. The win snaps the Orange's two-game losing streak and improves their record to 9-3-1 overall, 3-2-1 in the ACC.
Â
The game-winning goal was set up by a shot by sophomore Jonathan Hagman. His hard shot was blocked by a Virginia Tech defender. The ball bounced off another Hokies player to Camargo on the right side of the box. He got off a sliding shot that got by Virginia Tech goalkeeper Ben Lundgaard for the only goal of the match. It was the first goal as a member of the Orange for Camargo, who transferred to Syracuse from Coastal Carolina.
"It's been a long time coming," Camargo said of his goal. "I've never been happier to score a goal. I haven't smiled that big in a while."
Â
Camargo nearly gave the Orange the lead in the eighth minute, but his shot went off the post. Syracuse had several scoring chances in the first half but couldn't take advantage of its opportunities. Camargo tested Ben Lundgaard late in the half, but the Hokies' goalkeeper made one of his six saves on the night as the teams went into the locker rooms tied at 0-0.
Â
The Orange continued to apply pressure in the second half as they recorded two shots and earned a corner kick in the first 10 minutes. After Camargo gave Syracuse the lead, the Orange continued to press forward and controlled possession for the remainder of the half. Virginia Tech (9-3-2, 2-3-1) earned a corner kick in the 86th minute, but Syracuse goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert knocked the ball out of the box to end the Hokies' final scoring chance.
Â
Hilpert was rarely tested as he needed to make just one save. It was his seventh shutout of the season and 13th of his career. Hilpert and the back line of senior Louis Cross and sophomores Kamal Miller and Miles Robinson held Marcelo Acuna, the second-leading goal scorer in the ACC, to no points and just one shot on goal.
"This was an important three points (in the ACC standings) for us," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "Virginia Tech is a very good team. For our guys to keep this team off the scoresheet tonight was a great performance."
