10/21/2016 10:31:00 PM | Men's Soccer
CLEMSON, S.C. – Syracuse sophomore goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert made a save in each of the overtime sessions as No. 6 Syracuse played to a 0-0 tie at No. 8 Clemson on Friday, Oct. 21. The Orange are now 10-3-2 overall, 3-2-2 in the ACC, while the Tigers go to 9-2-4, 3-1-3 in conference action.
Â
"This was a real intense, physical, exciting, no-holds-barred college soccer game," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "This is a real tough place to play and to secure a point on the road in the ACC – we all feel good about that. On another night maybe we sneak out a win, but I'm sure they feel the same way as they also had chances to score. I think both teams will come away from this game feeling happy."
Â
The first half was evenly played as neither team could break down the other's defense. The Orange earned a corner kick in the first minute, but couldn't get off a shot. Sophomore Jonathan Hagman had Syracuse's first scoring chance, but his shot in the 22nd minute went wide. Syracuse was able to get a couple of shots off on corner kicks, but neither were on frame. The Tigers were not able put either of their two shots in the half on goal, the first of which didn't come until the 32nd minute.
Â
The Orange outshot Clemson in the second half, 6-3, but it was the Tigers that had the best scoring chance when a wide open Trey Langlois had a shot from inside the box, but his attempt sailed over the crossbar in the 80th minute. Senior Chris Nanco had the final chance in regulation, but his shot went wide as the game went into overtime.
Â
Both teams came out aggressively in the first extra session. Hilpert was tested for the first time 38 seconds into overtime as he recorded a save on Grayson Rainer's shot. Syracuse was the more dangerous team the remainder of the first overtime. Hagman put his shot on goal in the 95th minute, which Ximo Miralles stopped for one of his two saves. A Tiger foul in the 96th minute led to another scoring opportunity. Senior Oyvind Alseth placed his free kick perfectly into the box, but a Clemson defender got around sophomore Miles Robinson enough to deflect the ball out of bounds.
Â
Hilpert kept the game tied with his diving stop on Michael Melvin's shot from the left side in the opening minute of the second overtime period. Neither team could get a shot off for the remainder of the game for the 0-0 tie.
Â
The shutout was the third straight for the Orange. Overall, Syracuse's defense has posted nine shutouts this season, including five in ACC play.
Â
The Orange closes out the regular on Friday, Oct. 28 against No. 2 Wake Forest at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. It will be their fifth match against a team ranked in the top 10 this season.
Â
"We're playing national tournament type games every time out," McIntyre said. "After a tough travel week and going to overtime, our guys showed tremendous character and resolve. We'll put ourselves back together and get ready for another exciting game on Senior Night against a terrific team that is fighting for the national championship."
