The No. 2 Syracuse field hockey team (14-2) capped off its regular season with a 3-0 victory over Indiana (8-11) on Senior Day at J.S. Coyne Stadium on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
Â
Defeating the Hoosiers for the second year in a row, the Orange completed the regular season with an undefeated home record for the second year in a row.
Â
With a goal in the first half and two in the second, Syracuse maintained the lead for just under 51 of the game's 70 minutes, outshooting Indiana 22-5 and picking up eight penalty corners compared to just two by the Hoosiers.
Â
Laura Hurff got things started for the Orange 19 minutes into the game. Collecting a rebound off a saved penalty corner, Hurff beat Indiana keeper Katie Johnson with a shot from right in front of the net to put Syracuse up 1-0.
Â
The Orange capitalized on another opportunity early in the second. Receiving a pass across the arc from Elaine Carey, Emma Tufts popped a shot just over the goalie's reach, finding the back of the net for her second goal of the season, and the Orange's second of the game.
Â
Liz Sack extended the lead about ten minutes later. Driving her way into the arc, Sack fired an unassisted goal into the top corner of the goal for the game's final goal, giving the Orange the 3-0 lead that it would hold onto for the remaining 20 minutes of play.
Â
Regan Spencer preserved the clean sheet with two saves for Syracuse, while Lies Lagerweij also added a defensive save in diving fashion to hold the Hoosiers scoreless.
Â
Prior to the game, the five Syracuse seniors – Serra Degnan, Lydia Fowler, Emma Lamison, Sack and Spencer – were honored as the group played its final regular season game at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
Â
Having wrapped up a 14-2 regular season, Syracuse looks ahead to the ACC Tournament later this week. The second-seeded Orange will take on seventh-seeded Wake Forest on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The first-round matchup will be broadcast on RSN and ACC Network Extra.
