Weers scores twice in the loss
The No. 2 Syracuse field hockey team (14-3) made a strong second half push to tie the game at three after trailing No. 19 Wake Forest (11-7) 3-1 at the intermission, however the Demon Deacons were able to rally in overtime to score the game winner in the ACC Quarterfinal and win 4-3.
The Orange used a penalty stroke goal from Lies Lagerweij in the first half and two goals off corners from Roos Weers in the second to provide the scoring, but it wasn't enough to advance in the conference tournament.
Julie Grashoff scored the game's first goal for the Demon Deacons only six minutes into action. But Syracuse quickly rallied, after Elaine Carey was taken down in the circle in the 19th minute, Lagerweij scored a penalty stroke goal on the ensuing opportunity.
Wake Forest again provided the answer, scoring two goals in a five-minute span off penalty corners to take a 3-1 lead into the locker room.
After 12 minutes of back-and-forth play to start the second half, the Orange got a spark when Emma Lamison drew an Orange corner in the 48th minute. Weers then buried the corner attempt off assists from Emma Lamison and Serra Degnan.
Ninety three seconds later, it was Weers again off another corner that provided the equalizer. This time, Nijsje Venrooy served as the inserter and Elaine Carey the stick stop, with both getting assists on the play.
Syracuse had another strong chance late when the Orange was again awarded a penalty stroke, this time Wake Forest goalkeeper Cat O'Connor guessed right and made the save.
She made four saves on the afternoon, as did Orange goalkeeper Regan Spencer, with each of Spencer's coming in a big spot.
With the game knotted at three at the end of 70 minutes, it went to extra time. Both teams had a corner chance early in overtime, with neither successful. Sarah Thornhill ended the game for Wake Forest in the 78th minute to advance.

Wake Forest outshot 'Cuse 15-13, just the second time on the season that Syracuse has been outshot in a game. The Demon Deacons also controlled corners, earning eight to Syracuse's six.
The Orange will next find out its NCAA Tournament fate at 10 p.m. on Sunday in the NCAA Tournament selection show.
