Roberson Leads 'Cuse To Opening Win

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Â The 2016-17 season commenced with back-to-back Tyler Roberson dunks, a telling sign for the night. The senior led Syracuse to an 83-55 win against Colgate with 18 points in the season opener at the Carrier Dome in front of 23,844 fans on Friday night.Â
The Orange defeated their most familiar foe for the 51st straight time, the longest active series streak in the Division I ranks. It was the 169th meeting between the two clubs.
The Raiders and the Orange traded basket for basket to begin the game. At the 11:30 mark, with Syracuse leading 18-15, the Orange used a 12-0 run to expand their lead to 30-15 in a span of 3:44. The run was fueled by Roberson with six points. At the end of the half, 'Cuse led 49-25. The Raiders were unable to get any closer in the second half with the Orange outscoring them 34-30.
It was a balanced effort offensively for Syracuse with 10 players scoring in the game four finishing the game in double figures. Andrew White posted 17 points, the second most on the team, in his first official game with the Orange. John Gillon added 13 points and six assists in his Syracuse debut.Â
Sophomore point guard Frank Howard had a career night with 11 points and eight assists, both personal-best efforts. Howard also registered four rebounds and four steals in the contest.
Taurean Thompson, Tyus Battle and Paschal Chukwu each scored in thier first outings with the Orange. Thompson had three points and led the team with seven rebounds on the night. Chukwu finished with four points, five rebounds, a block and a steal. Battle had six points.
Syracuse outscored Colgate in the paint, 48-20, and had a 23-0 advantage in fast-break points.Â
With the win, Syracuse improved to 37-4 in season openers under head coach Jim Boeheim.Â
The Orange kick off the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational with Holy Cross on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at the Carrier Dome. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.Â
