Gorelina, Prokudina with double-digit kills
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Orange volleyball team fell at Boston College in four sets (26-24, 25-23, 19-25, 25-23) on Wednesday night at the Power Gym in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The two Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) rivals ended up splitting the season series.
Syracuse is now 5-8 in conference play and 6-17 overall, while the Eagles improved to 2-11 in the ACC and 7-16 overall.
The Orange were plagued by serve-reception errors in the loss, as the Eagles tallied nine service aces to only two from Syracuse.
Despite the serve trouble, Syracuse posted the top hitting percentage, averaging .250 percent on the game (54 kills – 18 errors – 144 attempts). The Eagles hit just .164 percent (56 kills – 30 errors – 159 attempts) due to nearly double the number of attacking errors as the Orange.
The pair of sophomore Anastasiya Gorelina and freshman Polina Prokudina led the Orange attack, as Gorelina tallied 14 kills and Prokudina added a career-high 12 kills to the 'Cuse offense.
Gorelina led the Orange from the service line with a pair of service aces, the only two for the Orange in the four-set game.
The duo of sophomore Santita Ebangwese and redshirt sophomore Christina Oyawale tallied eight kills apiece, adding to the Orange offensive effort.
Jalissa Trotter posted her 11th double-double of the season, registering 28 assists and 12 digs on the night.
Middle blocker Leah Levert led the 'Cuse defensive effort, as the junior had eight total blocks, six assisted and two solo stops, at the net.
The two clubs took turns trading serves through the entirety of the first set, tying the game 17 times before two straight points sealed the deal for BC in the first set, 26-24.
Syracuse took a quick, 10-6 lead in the second. Boston College didn't let up and the Eagles pushed to tie the game at 17 and again at 18 and 20.
The Orange were still within two at 23-21 before the Eagles closed out the set, 25-23.
The Orange gained the lead early in the third set and maintained an advantage before emerging, 25-19.
Boston College regained the momentum in the fourth set and moved in front 16-9. Syracuse responded with a seven-point run and the contest was knotted at 17-17. The Eagles won eight of the final 14 points to secure the triumph.
The Orange continue the road trip on Friday when they take on Virginia in Charlottesville. The first serve is set for 7 p.m.
