SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Sergio Camargo scored twice and sophomore goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert made four saves to lead No. 8-seed Syracuse to a 3-0 victory against Dartmouth in the second round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament. The Orange advance to the third round for the third consecutive year where they will face No. 9 seed North Carolina on Sunday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. in Syracuse.
Â
"It was hard work today," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "We feel privileged to be advancing and still be playing next week. You know you have a good team if you can still be playing over Thanksgiving break. We have a good group and I think we deserved it over the 90 minutes. That was a wonderful Dartmouth team."
Â
Syracuse (12-3-4) applied pressure early and took the lead in the seventh minute. Camargo got off a shot that Dartmouth goalkeeper James Hickok deflected to senior Chris Nanco, who put his shot from the right side into the back of the net for his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Â
Â
Dartmouth (9-5-5) became more organized and produced two shots and earned a corner kick, which the Orange successfully defended against to keep the Big Green off the scoreboard. Camargo added to the lead in the 24th minute. On a run to the goal, Camargo passed the ball to freshman Johannes Pieles. Pieles placed his pass perfectly back to a charging Camargo, who scored his third goal of the season.
Â
The final goal of the match came in the 59th minute. Camargo got through two Dartmouth defenders and around Hickok, who came out to play the ball, and put his shot in the right corner for his first multiple-goal game of the season and increase the Orange's lead to 3-0.
Â
The snow that had been falling all game picked up in intensity as the second half progressed, but both teams were able produce scoring chances. Hilpert made his fourth save of the game in the 81st minute and Syracuse's defense did not allow a shot on Dartmouth's two corner kicks in the final nine minutes as the Orange posted their 11th shutout of the season and their third straight in NCAA Tournament play, dating back to last season.
Â
Syracuse outshot Dartmouth, 13-7, while the Big Green had five corner kicks to one for the Orange. Hilpert now has 11 shutouts this season, which tie him for second on Syracuse's single-season record list.
Â
With the win, the Orange improved their NCAA Tournament record to 7-2-2. Syracuse will host a third-round match for the second consecutive year.
