Orange looking to build off historic 2015-16 season
After claiming the program's first ACC track championship last season and Orange student-athletes earning 10 All-America honors combined in the indoor and outdoor campaigns, the Syracuse track and field teams will look to replicate the success of 2015-16 at a number of familiar meets this season.
Complete Schedule
The Orange will kick off the indoor slate on Saturday, Dec. 3 at the Greg Page Relays at Cornell for their only meet of the fall semester, before beginning the remainder of the slate on Jan. 13 at the Ramapo Invitational, where Tia Thevenin and Freddie Crittenden III look to defend their 60-meter hurdles wins from last season at the event.
'Cuse will then head to Cornell for the Upstate Challenge on Jan. 21 – the second of six meets in Ithaca this season, which include the Robert Kane Invite (Feb. 12) and Marc Deneault Invite (Feb. 18) during the indoor slate and the Outdoor Upstate Challenge (April 23) and Big Red Invitational (April 30) during the outdoor campaign.
Following the Upstate Challenge, the Orange will head to the Villanova Open on Jan 27, before their first split weekend of the year on January 27-28. SU will take on the John Thomas Invitational in Boston, where three members of the Orange – Justyn Knight, Adam Palamar and Joel Hubbard – all broke the four minute mark in the mile last season, with some members of the team heading to Seattle for the UW Invitational that same weekend.
'Cuse then heads back to Boston to compete in a pair of different meets on Feb. 3-4. Some members of the squad will race at the Harvard Crimson Elite, while others take on the same track from a week prior at Boston's Scarlet and White Invitational.
The last two big meets prior to the ACC Championships will take place Feb. 10-11. Syracuse is returning to the Iowa State Classic, where Colin Bennie broke a 33-year old Syracuse 5,000-meter record (13:38.81) and Knight set a new school, track and meet record in the 3,000-meters (7:48.71) the same day last season, all while Hubbard and Palamar turned in two more sub-four minute miles.
The other meet of the weekend is the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, another return from last season, where Kadejhia Sellers broke Syracuse's 200-meter dash record (23.90), and Orange alum and 2016 Olympian Flings Owusu-Agyapong set the Ghana national record in the same event (23.34).
That regular season sets up for the Orange to look to defend its ACC Men's Indoor Track Championship, which will be held this year from Feb. 23-25 in South Bend, Indiana. Knight (3000 and 5000) and Crittenden III (60-meter hurdles) look to defend their individual titles as well.
After that, the Orange will go to the NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas from March 10-11, where Crittenden III highlighted all 'Cuse competitors with his NCAA runner-up performance in the 60-meter hurdles. Knight also podiumed with a third-place finish in the 3000-meters as a program record four Syracuse student-athletes picked up USTFCCCA First Team All-America honors at the meet.
After a three-week layoff, the Orange return to action on March 31, with distance runners heading to the Stanford Invitational and the sprints group taking on the Florida Relays.
The team will split up the same way the following weekend, with the sprinters again in Florida at the Miami Hurricane Alumni Invitational, and the distance runners competing at Princeton's Sam Howell Invitational. Crittenden III is the reigning 110-meter hurdles champion in Miami, winning last year's event by a full two tenths of a second (13.53).
Following a one-week layoff, the busiest weekend of the outdoor slate looms from April 21-21, when the team will split up to four-different meets, beginning at the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton on Thursday. Friday, members of the Orange will race at both the Virginia Challenge and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Invitational, before competing at the Cornell Upstate Challenge on Sunday.
At last year's Virginia Challenge, Knight broke his own school record in the 1500-meters, racing to a time of 3:39.23.
On April 27, the sprinters will head to the historic Penn Relays before the distance group takes on the Virginia Grand Prix on April 29.
The final regular season meet of 2017 will be the Payton Jordan Invitational on May 4-5, before 'Cuse kicks off ACC Championship competition on May 12 in Atlanta.
Crittenden III also won the 110-meter hurdles event last season and will look to continue his championship streak during his final conference championship meet.
This year's NCAA East Prelims will take place in Lexington, Kentucky from May 25-27, before the NCAA Championships return to Eugene, Oregon once again on June 6-10 to conclude the 2016-17 slate.
