CLEMSON, S.C. – No. 7 Syracuse lost a penalty shootout, 4-2, at Clemson in the quarterfinals of the ACC Men's Soccer Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 6. The  match officially ended a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of play.
Â
It marked the third straight meeting between the two teams that went to overtime and the second time in the last two years that a shootout decided the advancing team in tournament play.
Â
The Orange (11-3-4) went first in the shootout and sophomore Kamal Miller converted his penalty kick to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead. Clemson goalkeeper Brady Allardice, who did not see any action during the match, stopped the Orange's next two attempts as the Tigers took a 3-1 lead in the round of five. Redshirt junior Kenny Lassiter converted his shot to cut the lead to one, but Diego Campos put his attempt in the back of the net to clinch the shootout victory.
Â
"In the second half, they adjusted and started winning the 50-50 balls," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "But we kept pushing. We kept going and found a way to score the equalizer. Then I thought we had a couple of chances to win it. There hasn't been a lot of difference between these two teams the last couple of years.
Â
The first half was a defensive battle as neither team was able to generate many scoring opportunities. Syracuse's first chance came in the 15th minute when senior Chris Nanco played the ball out to senior Oyvind Alseth. Alseth crossed the ball into the box to freshman Johannes Pieles, who was making a run at the net. Pieles got a shot off that went over the cross bar.
Â
Nanco had another chance in the 42nd minute when he received a through ball from Lassiter, but his shot went just wide as the teams went into the locker rooms tied at 0-0 at intermission.
Â
Both teams were more dangerous in the second half. Syracuse goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert made two of his three saves in a span of 10 minutes to keep Clemson off the scoreboard. Â Junior Kalifa Sylla got a shot off in the 66th minute that was saved by Tigers' goalkeeper Ximo Miralles. On the rebound, Patrick Bunk-Anderse played the ball long to Campus, who took control of the ball with a Syracuse defender on him, and scored from 22 yards out to give Clemson a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Orange continued to apply offensive pressure and were awarded a penalty kick in the 86th minute when the Tigers were called for a handball in the box. Senior Sergio Camargo converted the penalty kick to tie the score at 1-1 as the match went to overtime for the third straight meeting between the two schools.
Â
In the first overtime session, both teams produced scoring chances, but it was Clemson that had a corner kick in the final minute after freshman Mo Adams deflected a hard shot out of bounds. Â The Orange successfully defended against the corner, not allowing a Tiger shot to send the match to a second overtime.
Â
Syracuse outshot Clemson, 3-1, in the second overtime session but none were on goal as the match went to the penalty kick shootout. It marked the second straight season the Orange and Tigers have competed in a shootout as the teams' match in the national semifinals in last year's College Cup also was decided by penalty kicks.
Â
Syracuse outshot Clemson, 15-12, while the Tigers had four corner kicks to two for the Orange. Hilpert and Miralles both finished with three saves.
Â
The Orange now await the NCAA Tournament pairings, which will be announced on Monday, Nov. 14. Syracuse was No. 11 in the latest RPI.
Â
"This team has a lot of soccer left in it," McIntyre said. "I couldn't be prouder of this group. We left it all out there today."
