3,932 attend the first School Day in the Carrier Dome
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The No. 20/19 Syracuse women's basketball defeated Coppin State, 76-30, at its first annual School Day on Wednesday morning in the Carrier Dome. The total attendance for the contest was 3,932, the third-highest in program history.
"I'm very happy with our team's effort," head coach Quentin Hillsman stated. "I thought we came out pretty strong. The most important thing for us is to not come out and play flat or play stagnant. I thought our kids came out and played with a lot of effort and that was important to me coming into this game."
The Orange (7-3) clearly had a home-court advantage throughout the contest. In the first 10 minutes of play, 'Cuse held a dominating lead of 26-2, with Coppin State's (0-8) first points coming 9:52 into regulation. Syracuse kept this style of play up in the second quarter, only giving up five points. It marked the fewest points the Orange had given up since holding Delaware State to three points in the second half on Dec. 4, 2010.
As a team, the Orange recorded an astounding 50 rebounds, 14 steals, and 28 forced turnovers on the day.
Senior guard Alexis Peterson played an impressive game. She scored a team-high 16 points, pacing the club in scoring for the sixth-straight outing. The Columbus, Ohio native also recorded nine assists and six steals.
Senior center Briana Day recorded a team-best 14 rebounds. She is two boards shy of moving into fifth place on the program's all-time rebounding list. Her twin sister, Bria Day, and senior forward Isabella Slim each notched nine rebounds, as well.
For the Eagles, Tiara Goode and Keena Samuels scored a combined 26 points. The players also recorded a combined 13 rebounds and five steals.
The Orange return to the court Saturday afternoon when it takes on Niagara. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m. at the Carrier Dome, following the men's game at noon against Boston University. It will be broadcasted live on ACC Network Extra.
