Syracuse tops the 100-point mark for the second time this year
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The No. 20/19 Syracuse women's basketball defeated Niagara, 109-60, on Saturday afternoon in the Carrier Dome. 109 points scored marks the most points the Orange have scored in a single game so far this season and only four short of the program record.
"We got the pace that we wanted in this game," said head coach Quentin Hillsman. "We really wanted to get them down the court, play fast, and try to get into our pressure. The players did great; they did a good job of doing that. I'm really proud of our effort."
The Orange (8-3) dominated the Eagles (4-5) early in the game, with the first quarter ending 32-8. 'Cuse has outscored its opponents, 58-10, in the first quarter in the last two games.
Going into the second half, Syracuse clenched a 62-19 lead, two points away from the program record. The Orange scored 64 points in the first half against Maryland East Shore in 2013.
As a team, the Orange recorded 16 steals and forced 27 turnovers. They held onto the lead the entire game, with the biggest point difference hitting 53 points.
Redshirt senior guard Brittney Sykes recorded a double-double in the first half, scoring 17 points and gaining 10 rebounds. She finished the game with 23 points, 13 rebounds, and 8 assists. Sykes became the first player to lead the team in points, boards, and helpers since Iasia Hemingway did so at Villanova in 2012. The Newark, N.J. native now has a career total of 1,409 points, bumping her to eighth place on the Syracuse all-time scoring list.
Senior center Bria Day paced the club with a personal-best four assists. She also scored a total of 12 points, another career high, and recorded five rebounds. Her twin sister, Brianna Day, scored 19 points, the second-most on the team, and recorded six rebounds.
