ATLANTA, Ga. - The Syracuse softball team came up short 4-3 against Purdue in eight innings on Friday in its first game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Georgia Tech's Mewborn Field. Tied at three apiece in the bottom of the eighth inning, Purdue (4-2) filled up the bases and a hit to left center by Maddie Damon was enough to successfully send one home for the Boilermakers to come out on top with the win.
Â
Sophomore Rachel Burkhardt went 2-4 on the day while reaching home plate two times out of the Orange's three total touches at home. Freshmen Andrea Bombace and Hannah Dossett and sophomore Kelsey Johnson each tallied an RBI, with Bombace and Dossett both driving in runs off of doubles. Â The underclassmen accounted for five of the Orange's seven total hits on the day.
Â
Senior Corinne Ozanne was accountable for 11 putouts, while sophomore pitcher AnnaMarie Gatti assisted on a team-high five putouts.
Â
Syracuse (1-4) got on the boards early in the top of the second thanks to a double to right center by Bombace that completed a trip home for Burkhardt. After that, the Orange led with a one-run advantage for almost four innings, until a turnaround in the bottom of the fifth put the Boilermakers on top. A single to second base and an error drove two Boilermakers home, and another base hit to left field with two outs reeled in one more run to make it 3-1 Purdue.
Â
The Orange struck right back in the top of the sixth, as three hits in a row capped by a double to left field from Dossett propelled redshirt sophomore Olivia Martinez home. After that, Johnson reached first on a fielder's choice, resulting in Burkhardt sliding safely into home plate to even the score out at three.
Â
Both squads proceeded to hold each other scoreless after seven innings, forcing an extra inning. Three outs in a row with the Orange at bat in the top of the eighth sent the Boilermakers up next to eventually decide the game in Purdue's favor, 4-3.
Â
Syracuse is back in action tomorrow, Feb. 20, taking on Ohio State at 10 a.m. and facing Purdue again at 12:30 p.m. at Mewborn Field.
