Fox and Hegland Earn USTFCCCA Honors
3/5/2016 8:50:00 AM | Track and Field
Syracuse head coach Chris Fox and sprints coach Dave Hegland were honored by the USTFCCCA for their outstanding indoor season. After coaching together for more than a decade, Hegland and Fox have transformed the Orange programs.
Fox picked up USTFCCCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year and Hegland was named USTFCCCA Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year, following the team's ACC Indoor Championship last weekend.
Fox, along with associate head coach Brien Bell and assistant coach Adam Smith, have turned the Syracuse distance program into one of the nation's elite programs, highlighted by the men winning the 2015 NCAA Cross Country National Championship. In his 11 years at the helm of the program, Fox has turned the Orange into a perennial contender.
Hegland, along with the help of assistant coach Frank Rizzo, has turned the Orange into a formidable sprints program both in the ACC and across the country, with the Orange continuing to dominate in the hurdles at the ACC Championships this season.
Fox, who was named USTFCCCA Cross Country Coach of the Year this fall after guiding the Orange to their first National Championship since 1951, continued his success into the indoor campaign, with six 'Cuse student-athletes set to represent Syracuse at the NCAA Championship this week.
Syracuse's Justyn Knight, Adam Palamar, Colin Bennie, Joel Hubbard, Freddie Crittenden III and Shaina Harrison will compete at this year's event. Syracuse has never had more than three All-Americans in indoor track in program history.
Without a complete field roster, the Orange claimed the ACC Championship, its first conference indoor title since 1992 by dominating the distance events and the 60-meter hurldles, an event that is Hegland's specialty.
Knight and Crittenden III won ACC Championships for the Orange, en route to claiming the title.
Fox and Hegland will lead the Orange into the NCAA Championship on Friday.
