SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Senior Corinne Ozanne became the first batter in Syracuse history to reach 47 career home runs on Wednesday evening after the Orange swept Canisius 4-0 and 22-1 in five innings at Skytop Softball Stadium.
Â
The Center Valley, Pa. native started things off right in the first game with two solo home runs, before adding another solo and a grand slam for her 47th career homer in the second game. She hit nothing but homers in the doubleheader, finishing the day going 4-5 at the plate while racking up seven total RBIs.
Â
Ozanne wasn't the only one with a hot bat on the evening, as freshman Andrea Bombace and sophomore Maddi Doane tallied two homers apiece in the latter game to help to tie the team single-game record of six home runs. Freshman Hannah Dossett added one in the first game to contribute to the Orange's nine total home runs in the doubleheader.
Â
- Doane's two home runs in the second game were her first homers of the season, finishing with six RBIs on the evening.
- 12 Orange got in on the hitting action over the span of two games.
- Dossett finished the day with three hits, including a double and a home run.
- Cater earned the shutout win in the first game, tossing all seven innings and allowing five hits while retiring eight batters.
- The 22 runs scored in the second game was just one run shy of matching the program record of runs scored, set by the 2011 Orange after shutting out Rutgers 23-0.
Â
GAME 1
Ozanne started the Orange off with a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the third inning to grab a 1-0 lead.
Â
Syracuse tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a sacrifice fly from Doane that sent junior Alyssa Dewes at third to home plate. Dewes used a sacrifice bunt by Sammy Fernandez to reach second after getting hit by a pitch, and stole her way to third before the sacrifice fly.
Â
Dossett topped it off in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer to left field, sealing a 4-0 victory for the Orange.
Â
GAME 2 (Five Innings)
Doane got the 22-run rally started in the bottom of the first with a solo home run to center field. Canisius answered right back in the top of the second with a home run past the left center fence for their first and only run of the day.
Â
The Orange slugfest began in the bottom of the second, as three base hits in a row by Dossett, freshman Alicia Hansen, and redshirt sophomore Olivia Martinez drove in two RBIs to make it a 3-1 game.
With two on base and two outs on the board, Doane stepped up to the plate and sent another one past the center field wall for a three-run homer to extend the lead 6-1. Moments later, Ozanne jacked one to right center field for her third home run of the day to widen the Orange scoring gap to six runs.
Â
The Orange bats only grew hotter heading into the bottom of the third, after a lead-off home run to right field by Bombace gave 'Cuse its eighth run of the game. With one out, a single through the left side by sophomore Rachel Burkhardt plated two more runs, before a sacrifice fly by Doane brought in another run to make it an 11-1 ball game.
Â
An RBI single up the middle by junior Sydney O'Hara with two outs on the board welcomed Burkhardt to home plate and kept two runners on base. Bombace finished the inning the same way she started it, sending another one out of the park for a three-run homer to give the Orange a 15-1 advantage after just three innings of play.
Â
Four hits and a plethora of Canisius errors racked up seven more runs for the Orange in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by Ozanne's grand slam to left field that brought Aliyah Wade, Hailey Archuleta, and Kelsey Johnson along with her.
Â
With the score 20-1, two Golden Griffin errors and a fielder's choice play at third put runners on first and second. An error by the third baseman with Hansen at the plate and a throwing error by the shortstop drove Bombace home.
Â
Freshman Mariko Kondo sealed the deal with an RBI base hit to third that capped the 22-run game for the Orange.
Â
Syracuse remains home this weekend, resuming ACC play with a three-game series against NC State. The Orange and the Wolfpack start things off with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 16 at 1 p.m. The two teams close the weekend with a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
