Butler became the third player in Syracuse history to be selected in the WNBA Draft
UNCASVILLE, Conn. – With the 23rd overall selection of the 2016 WNBA Draft, the Los Angeles Sparks selected guard Brianna Butler of the Syracuse University women's basketball team. Butler joins Kayla Alexander (2013) and Beth Record (2001) as the only players in program history to be selected in the WNBA Draft.
"I am really excited to make it to the next stage and join the Los Angeles Sparks," Butler commented.
"Well deserved for the best shooter in Syracuse history and one of the best people I have ever been associated with," head coach Quentin Hillsman stated. "I cannot overstate how happy I am for Brianna and her family."
Butler leaves Syracuse as one of the best players in school history. The King of Prussia, Pa. native ranks fourth in Orange history with 1,640 career points scored. She holds the program records for 3-point field goals made (373), games started (135), and minutes played (4,176).
The guard ranks as one of the best 3-point shooters in NCAA Division I history, as well. Butler recently broke the NCAA Division I single-season record with 129 3-point field goals made during the 2015-16 season. She ended her career ranked 12th in NCAA Division I history with 373 career 3-pointers made.
In her final season on campus, Butler helped guide Syracuse to its best season in its history. Butler ranked second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.2 points per game. She certainly collected many accolades in the process, taking home All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors and was named to the All-Sioux Falls Region Team.
Los Angeles finished the 2015 campaign with a 14-20 overall record and lost in the Western Conference semifinals to the eventual champions, Minnesota Lynx. The Sparks are led by two-time WNBA Most Valuable Player Candace Parker.
