Â
In its last game, Syracuse coasted to an 80-59 victory against RV/- Washington in the 2016 NCAA Tournament semifinals on April 3. For the seventh straight NCAA Tournament contest, junior guard Alexis Peterson led the way in scoring for the Orange. Peterson notched 18 points on the night.
Â
Connecticut enters Tuesday's game with a perfect 37-0 overall record and has won 74 straight contests, which is the second-longest winning streak in NCAA Division I history. The Huskies are seeking their fourth straight NCAA Tournament title. UConn is led by senior forward Breanna Stewart, a three-time Associated Press National Player of the Year. Stewart is a native of North Syracuse and attended Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
Â
Success Against the Best
Under head coach Quentin Hillsman, the Orange have defeated at least one opponent ranked in the top 25 of the Associated Press Poll every season since 2007-08. This season, the club has knocked off five nationally-ranked foes, which is a program record.
Â
Syracuse's last victory against a nationally-ranked foe was an 80-72 victory against No. 3/2 South Carolina on March 25. It matched the highest-ranked opponent the Orange have ever defeated. The Orange defeated No. 2/2 Connecticut, 62-59, at Manley Field House on Jan. 2, 1996.
Â
Last Time Out
The historic run is not yet over. Syracuse danced its way to the NCAA Tournament final with a dominant 80-59 victory over Washington on April 3 to put the program one win away from its first national title. The Orange, which had never previously reached a Sweet 16 prior to this season, will square off with No. 1/1 Connecticut for a national championship on Tuesday.
Â
The Orange led by as many as 24 points in the historic victory over the Huskies, propelling Syracuse to stand as one of the last two teams still playing. Syracuse's win marks the first 30-win season in program history and gives the senior class 99 wins for their careers.
Â
Senior guard Brianna Butler hit a milestone of her own, setting the NCAA single-season record for 3-pointers with 128 on the season. She sunk four of Syracuse's Final Four-record 12 long balls on the night, finishing with 12 points in the win. Junior center Briana Day set the program record for rebounds in an NCAA tournament game with 15 in the win.
Â
As she has in every NCAA Tournament game thus far, junior guard Alexis Peterson led the team with 18 points and six assists, with redshirt junior guard Brittney Sykes adding 17 of her own.
