RALEIGH, N.C. - The seventh-seeded Syracuse softball team (27-26) battled it out with second-seeded Louisville (35-14), but ultimately came up short 1-0 on Thursday evening in the first day of the ACC Softball Championship at Dail Softball Stadium.
Â
After holding each other scoreless for four and a half innings, Louisville struck in the bottom of the fifth to eventually decide the one-run game in the Cardinals' favor. Two subsequent base hits in the first two at bats of the inning set runners on first and second, and an attempted double play from second to first with an error on the play brought the runner heading for third to home plate.
Â
Each team held the other to five hits on the evening, with sophomore AnnaMarie Gatti (12-14) tossing the full game in the circle for the Orange.
Â
Junior Alyssa Dewes and sophomore Kelsey Johnson powered the Orange hitting on the night, responsible for four of the five total hits, tallying two base hits apiece. Redshirt sophomore Olivia Martinez added the other base hit in the loss. Dewes finished the day with a perfect 2-2 showing at the plate, while Johnson went 2-3.
