Orange qualify as a team for the second time in school history
INDIANAPOLIS – The Syracuse University women's rowing team earned an at-large invitation to the 2016 NCAA Rowing Championship, as announced on Tuesday afternoon. It marks only the second time Syracuse has qualified for the national championship regatta as a team and first time since the 2002 campaign.
"Last year's non-invitation was really heartbreaking to everybody. This year's group remembered what it felt like to not be selected and worked to make sure that wasn't going to happen again," head coach Justin Moore stated. "This year was certainly not without its challenges. I have to give credit to attitudes and resiliency of the women on this team."
The 2016 NCAA Championship will take place at the Sacramento Aquatic Center in Gold River, Calif. Racing begins on Friday, May 27 and will conclude on Sunday, May 29.
The Orange earned the No. 16 seed for the first varsity eight competition, the main event of the NCAA Championship. It marks the sixth time in school history that Syracuse has qualified in the first varsity eight. Its best finish came at the 2001 NCAA Championship on Lake Lanier in Georgia, where it placed sixth overall.
The second varsity eight crew received the No. 16 seed, while the first varsity eight boat earned the No. 14 seed. The Orange's best finish in the second varsity eight competition at an NCAA Championship is 12th overall, while their best showing in the first varsity eight is 11th overall. Both of those performances were at the 2002 NCAA Championship on the Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis.
"When I arrived six years ago, this is what we talked about," concluded Moore. "We didn't quite have everything in place when I arrived. One of the things we did have was great attitude. That first year's group knew they weren't going to go, but they really brought into the process of what we wanted to do. Each subsequent year, we built upon that."
