It's official. Syracuse cross country/track and field alum Katie Zaferes will represent the United States in the triathlon, the U.S. Olympic team announced on Tuesday.
The Orange alum joins Gwen Jorgensen and Sarah True as the three Americans to compete in the event in Rio de Janiero this summer, with all-three competitors entering as potential medalists. The U.S. is expected to have the most competitive field of any nation in the women's triathlon, with Zaferes reaching the podium six times in her 18 career starts on the World Triathlon Series.
"It means so much to me to be named to the 2016 Rio Olympic Team," Zaferes said. "In a country where the women's field is so competitive, I am honored to get the opportunity to represent the USA. I can't wait to join Gwen and Sarah in Rio — I have had high hopes of joining them after finishing on the podium with them twice last year."
The U.S. Olympic team is calling their 2016 squad the best they've ever sent to the Olympics in the women's triathlon.
"We are excited to confirm Katie to the 2016 Olympic Team," said Andy Schmitz, USA Triathlon High Performance General Manager. "In addition to Katie's six individual WTS medals, she joined with Gwen and Sarah to achieve two U.S. WTS podium sweeps in 2015, making this the most formidable team we have confirmed for the Olympic Games."
At Syracuse, Zaferes, then Katie Hursey, was a USTFCCCA Honorable Mention All-American in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as a senior in 2012 and graduated as the school record holder in the 3000-meter steeplechase and the indoor 5000-meter run.
The Olympic triathlon will take place on August 20.
