LONDON - Alyssa Manley and the U.S. Field Hockey team earned bronze in the Champions Trophy after tying Australia 2-2 and winning in a shooutout 1-0.
Manley saw plenty of action in the USA midfield, including a crucial defensive stop against New Zealand in a 1-on-1 situation in the waning moments that kept the game tied and sent the Americans to the bronze medal game.
The USWNT entered the tournament as the lowest ranked team in the event, which featured six of the world's top-seven teams in the FIH world rankings, out-playing its seed to finish third.
After opening with a draw against Australia, the U.S. fell in back to back matches to the Netherlands and Argentina.
"We fought the entire game," Manley said in an interview after the Argentina loss. "This match only adds fuel to our fire. We're putting in the energy and effort and will continue to do so for the remainder of the event."Â
That is exactly what the U.S. squad would do, defeating host Great Britain and tying New Zealand to advance to Sunday's bronze medal match.
Manley, the 2015 Honda Award recipient and captain of the NCAA Champions, was the ACC Defensive Player of the Year as a senior this season and went on to earn NFHCA First Team All-America honors for the second year in a row.
It's the second-straight summer Manley has won a medal with the U.S. National team after earning gold during last year's Pan American Games in Toronto. Next, for team USA is the Rio Sendoff Series, with contests against India and Canada in Lancaster, Pa. in July before the Olympics in Rio start in August.
