ITHACA, N.Y. -Â With the game on the line on Sunday against Cornell, Stephanie Skilton stepped up and did what senior leaders do. She made the play that gave her team a 2-1 win over the Big Red in overtime with a golden goal in the 95th minute. The goal came after her first shot was initially blocked, but Skilton showed persistence and eventually put the ball in the back of the net. She was promptly met by her entire team who piled on the senior in celebration.Â
The Orange improve to 4-1-1 on the season and hand Cornell its first loss of the season, dropping to 2-1-0 in 2016. The win snapped Cornell's 13-game unbeaten streak in non-conference play that dated back to Oct. 13, 2014. Â
The game winner was Skilton's second goal of the day after her 42nd minute goal just before halftime. On that goal, Skilton showed her technique lobbing the ball just over the reach of the Cornell goalkeeper, giving the Orange a 1-0 lead.Â
The Syracuse lead held until the 63rd minute when Cornell knotted up the score after the ball bounced around the box and eventually found its way into the net. Neither team would score again in regulation, taking the game into overtime.
Â
In overtime, Syracuse controlled much of the possession outshooting Cornell 5-0. Overall, the Orange outshot Cornell 14-10 in the game.Â
Â
Skilton's two goals bring her career total to 23 and the senior now has six game winners in her time at Syracuse. Sydney Brackett was credited with the assist on the golden goal, giving her two assists on the season.
Â
Junior goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan finished the match with two saves. Brosnan faced eight shots in the second half from Cornell.
Â
The Orange will continue its road swing with matches at Rhode Island on Sept. 8 and at Fairfield on Sept. 11.
