SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse head women's lacrosse coach Gary Gait has been appointed interim commissioner of the United Women's Lacrosse League (UWLX) while it searches for a permanent hire.
Â
"My first priority is and always will be Syracuse women's lacrosse," Gait said. "Working with UWLX gives me a chance to help provide the opportunity for female athletes to continue to play lacrosse at the elite level after college. I believe female athletes should be provided the same opportunities in sports as men, and I want my daughter to be able to play at a professional level like her male counterparts have had for more than 20 years."
Â
Gait is in his 10th season at the helm of the Orange women's lacrosse program. He has guided Syracuse to a record of 150-48, seven trips to the Final Four, including the last five years, one appearance in the NCAA Championship game and three conference tournament titles. Gait has mentored four Tewaaraton Award finalists, including Kayla Treanor, who is the only four-time first-team All-America in program history.
Â
The UWLX held its inaugural season in 2016 and featured four teams. It is the first semi-professional post-collegiate women's lacrosse league. Six former Orange were chosen in the league's inaugural draft and eight were on opening day rosters.
