White III leads ‘Cuse with 27 points
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Andrew White III scored a season-high 27 points for the Orange and Syracuse (12-9, 3-4 ACC) tallied a come-from-behind win against Wake Forest (12-8, 3-5), 81-76, on Tuesday night at the Carrier Dome.
White III surpassed 1,000 career points in the course of the evening (a total which included his play at Kansas and Nebraska). He posted a game-high five 3-pointers and was 10-of-10 from the free throw line on the evening. The 27-point game marks the 20th outing this season in double-digit figures for White III.
Trailing by eight points with 10:23 remaining, Syracuse mounted its comeback.The Orange narrowed the gap to three points twice, first on a 3-pointer by John Gillon and then on a layup from Taurean Thompson. Tyler Lydon followed Thompson's bucket with a 3-pointer to knot the score at 57-57. The contest was tied a 10th and 11th time before the Orange took charge.
After Thompson's basket tied things at 61-61, Tyus Battle converted a conventional three-point play and Thompson followed with his own three-point sequence after a nice pass from Gillon. The 8-0 run put Syracuse ahead, 67-61, with 4:25 remaining. Seven straight points from the Demon Deacons, including four from John Collins, put the visitors ahead, 68-67. The matchup was tied a 12th time when Gillon made one-of-two from the charity stripe, and White III followed with a 3-pointer with 1:23 left to push the Orange in fromt, 71-68
Wake Forest got within one point three more times, the last at 76-75 with nine seconds left before the Orange closed it out with two free throws apiece from White III and Thompson.
Thompson finished with 18 points, 16 of which came in the second half. Lydon tallied double-digit numbers for the 13th time in his last 14 games, posting 15 points and a team-leading nine rebounds to the Orange effort.
The win marked the first time Syracuse had overcome a halftime deficit this season and improved Syracuse's series advantage against Wake Forest to 5-0.
Collins led Wake Forest with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
The Orange continue the home stand on Saturday, Jan. 28 when they welcome #6/8 Florida State to the Carrier Dome. Tipoff is set for Noon. Tickets can be purchased online, by phone at 888-DOME-TIX and in person at Gate B at the Carrier Dome.
