Gillon, Lydon tally double-doubles
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Four Orange players scored in double-digits led by a game-high 24 points from Andrew White III and the Orange (13-9, 5-4 ACC) defeated No. 6/8 Florida State (18-4, 6-3 ACC), 82-72, on Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome.
White III scored in double-digits for the 21st time, leading the Orange in scoring for the 11th outing this season. The graduate transfer also added nine rebounds and four steals on the game.
The Orange trailed 14-13 with 8:57 on the clock in the first half before going on a 31-12 run to claim an 18-point, 44-26, lead heading to the locker room. White III led the Orange effort in the first half with 13 points and five rebounds.
Florida State returned to the hardwood looking to close the gap and managed to bring the game within two points five times before Syracuse ran away with a 10-2 game-ending run to claim the home-court win.
The Seminoles began the second-half surge with a 15-5 run to cut the Orange lead by 10 points to just eight, 49-41.
FSU continued the push, cutting Syracuse's advantageto just three, 54-51, with 12:22 to play. White III drained a 3-pointer to extend the lead back to six, 57-51, with 11:49 left on the clock.
With Florida State within two points again, Lydon slammed an offensive rebound from a Tyus Battle 3-point attempt into the basket to give SU a four-point, 62-58, lead.
With Syracuse ahead, 69-67 with 3:20 remaining, John Gillon went to work. He scored Syracuse's final 13 points, including an 11-of-12 effort from the foul line. The Seminoles pulled within two twice during the stretch but the Orange did not relinquish the lead.
Gillon tallied 11 assists to mark double-digit assist numbers for the third time this year. The graduate transfer completed his second double-double of the season with 21 points.
Lydon tallied 14 points and 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season and 11th in his career. Lydon's six blocked shots equaled his career-best effort.
Battle closed out the night with nine points and a career-high tying four assists.
Senior Tyler Roberson was the fourth Orange player in double-digits with 10 points and seven rebounds.
The victory was Syracuse's first win over a ranked team since the Orange defeated No. 4 Virginia, 68-62, last March in the NCAA tournament.
Syracuse takes to the road to face conference foe North Carolina State in Raleigh on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
