Syracuse will train in Florida ahead of spring season
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's rowing team headed to Palm Coast, Fla. for its winter training trip on Friday. Syracuse travels south annually in the early weeks of January as it prepares for its spring season.
"The Florida training trip has always been a great way to break up our winter training," senior Andrew Reichard stated. "Starting the week of Thanksgiving, we are on the ergs for six or seven weeks and return to the ergs for another eight weeks when the spring semester begins. Having the opportunity to break up this block of indoor training with a week on the water in warm weather is a huge mental boost."
Other than the obvious training purposes, the annual trip serves as a way for the team to come together. The winter training session is one of the first opportunities for the squad to be together for an extended trip, bond, and build a sense of comradery headed into the spring.
"The most exciting part of this trip will be the opportunity to work alongside the younger guys on the team for an entire week and get more of a feel for what they contribute in the boat," added Reichard. "It has been a unique year due to our smaller group of upperclassmen, but the freshmen and sophomores have done a great job of stepping up to the plate and contributing to boat speed."
Rowers have to qualify academically and athletically to be included on the travel roster for the annual winter training trip, earning an invitation based off their work in the fall semester. Once down there, it's not all just business, the team breaks up workouts with afternoon football games on the beach and core sessions by the pool.
When the Orange return to snowy Syracuse, they will resume training on the ergometers and in the rowing tank at Archbold Gymnasium in preparation for the spring season. The team will train indoors until the waters are cleared at the James A. Ten Eyck Memorial Boathouse in Liverpool and spring is right around the corner.
"Keeping a positive attitude all winter, looking ahead toward race season while still focusing on the daily process is the key to a successful winter training," concluded Reichard.
Syracuse opens the 2017 season on Saturday, April 8 against Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC)-foe Wisconsin. The race will be held in Skokie, Ill.
