Battle Erupts in Orange Victory Over Iona

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Tyus Battle scored a career-high 28 points with five rebounds and three assists to lead Syracuse (2-0) to a 71-62 victory over Iona (0-2) Tuesday night in the Carrier Dome. Eleven of Battle's 28 came in the final eight minutes of the second half to help the Orange pull away.
Junior Frank Howard added a career-high 15 points with four rebounds and three assists and freshman Oshae Brissett finished with 12 points.
How It Was Decided
Battle scored five points early on to give the Orange a 12-5 advantage. Iona answered with a 10-1 run of its own to take a 15-13 lead.
A layup and three-pointer on back-to-back possessions from Howard along with a Paschal Chukwu free throw and a jumper from Brissett helped the Orange regain a 24-17 lead.
A 6-0 Gael run trimmed the Syracuse lead to one, but a Bourama Sidibe free throw and a buzzer-beating layup from Howard gave the Orange a 32-28 halftime advantage.
With Syracuse clinging to a 44-41 lead, the Orange used a 7-2 run to extend the lead to 51-43. Iona answered with a three-pointer from Deyshonee Much and a Roland Griffin layup to pull within three.
With 5:37 remaining in regulation, Syracuse led 56-54. Battle put the game into his own hands and hit back-to-back contested jumpers to extend the Orange lead to six. A Sidibe free throw and a layup from Marek Dolezaj increased the lead to 63-54 with 3:10 to play.
Iona trimmed the gap to seven but a fast break dunk by Battle in the final minute of play capped off the victory for the Orange.
Of Note
Battle's scoring total eclipsed his previous career high of 23 points at Virginia Tech last season. On the night, Battle converted 11-of-19 shots from the field, making 2-of-7 three-pointers and 4-of-6 free throws.
Chukwu finished with game-highs of 10 rebounds and three blocks. The rebound total was a career-high for Chukwu.
Rickey McGill posted 21 points for Iona with six assists and four steals. McGill shot 6-of-13 from the field and 5-of-9 from three-point range.
