'Cuse Defeats RIT for First Road Win
11/17/2017 9:08:00 PM | Ice Hockey
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Syracuse ice hockey team (3-7-2, 2-0-1) picked up its first road win of the season after defeating RIT (4-8-1, 1-4-0), 4-1, Friday night at the Gene Polisseni Center. The Orange totaled 40 shots on goal against the Tigers, led by redshirt sophomore Lindsay Eastwood who tallied eight, including her second goal of the season.
"Having built a nice two-goal lead after the first period, RIT came at us hard for the final 40 minutes," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "The game was very close until Brooke scored the empty netter to seal the win."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
While Eastwood opened up scoring for Syracuse, sophomore Kelli Rowswell kept the Orange's momentum rolling with her fourth goal of the season, late in the first quarter. A second period goal by RIT cut the lead in half to make it 2-1, Syracuse, heading into the final frame.
Senior Abbey Miller dominated in net for the Orange, making 16 stops in the second and third periods, compared to saving just two shots faced in the first. With 1:33 remaining in the game, RIT pulled its goalie to put an extra player on the attack.
Brooke Avery capitalized on the lack of a presence in net, dumping in an empty-net goal to make it 3-0, Orange. Sophomore Logan Hicks capped the night for Syracuse, recording her first collegiate goal with just six seconds left in the game.
OF NOTE
The Orange are now 2-0-1 in conference play and sit tied for second in the conference behind No. 9 Robert Morris. However, of the six CHA teams, Syracuse has played the least amount of conference games, totaling just three against league opponents so far this season.
With her late-game goal, Hicks became the third Syracuse player to notch her first collegiate goal this season, with freshmen Emma Polaski and Victoria Klimek rounding out the trio. Junior Sarah Stuehr recorded her first career assist on the Hicks goal.
UP NEXT
Syracuse returns home to Tennity Ice Pavilion for game two of the series with RIT. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. and admission to all home games is free.
