Laura Hurff scored the game's opening goal and Carolin Hoffmann knotted things at two midway through the second half, but the No. 11 Syracuse field hockey (12-6) team came up a goal short against No. 10 Louisville (13-6) on Thursday, falling 3-2 in the ACC Quarterfinal.

Hurff got the scoring going in the sixth minute off a corner play. She inserted the corner to stick stop Elaine Carey, setting up a hard shot by Annalena Ulbrich. Ulbrich's shot was deflected in front by a cutting Hurff and have 'Cuse the lead.

It was a lead that the Orange would take into halftime, as 'Cuse dominated the first period, out-shooting Louisville 7-2.

The Cardinals answered out of the locker room, scoring twice in the first seven minutes of the second half, but Hoffmann only allowed the lead to remain for 1:20. Elaine Carey sent the ball up the sideline to Hoffmann, who dribbled all the way into the circle and finished for the equalizer.

After both teams had chances in the waning moments, it was the Cards who broke through, with Marigrace Ragsdale scoring on an assist from Nicole Woods with two minutes remaining and sending Louisville to the semis.

Syracuse finished with nine shots, and Borg van der Velde made four saves. Both teams also drew four penalty corners in the contest.
