SYRACUSE, NY – The No. 25 Syracuse women's basketball team (7-0) defeated Northwestern (5-3), 81-74, Thursday night in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at the Carrier Dome. With the victory over the Wildcats, Syracuse is now one of five schools in the nation whose men's (6-0) and women's (7-0) basketball teams went undefeated in the month of November.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
After a close first 10-minutes of play, the Orange held a narrow 19-17 lead over the Wildcats. Syracuse added an additional 15 points to the scoreboard but Northwestern came to battle, posting 19 second-quarter points to take a two-point advantage into halftime.
The Wildcats came out firing in the third-quarter grabbing a six-point lead just a minute into the frame, but a big-time 3-pointer by Miranda Drummond at the 7:01 mark propelled the Orange past Northwestern, to a 41-40 lead. The teams continued to trade baskets throughout the rest of quarter with Syracuse holding on to a 54-53 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes.
Northwestern countered in the fourth quarter with a 3-point play and a jumper to take a 60-57 lead. With 7:11 left in the game, redshirt junior Isis Young tied the game at 60, draining a huge three. The Orange never looked back, posting a 5-0 run over the next two minutes to extend their lead. Sophomore Tiana Mangakahia accounted for 15 of Syracuse's fourth quarter points, knocking down 11 free throws in quarter.
OF NOTE
Drummond totaled 29 points in the game, leading the Orange and setting a new career-high in points. She also tied her career-high in rebounds with 11, for her second double-double of the season. Drummond is the only Orange player to record double-digit outings in all seven games this season.
Mangakahia continued her assists parade, dishing 12 balls against Northwestern for her seventh consecutive 10+ assist game of the season. She also set a new career-high in points with 26, for her team-leading seventh double-double outing of the year.
The Australia native made 14 free throws in the game, tying for third in program history for made free throws. Her 14 baskets from the charity stripe are the most by an Orange player since 2003 when Julie McBride poured in 14 against Binghamton.
Sophomore Gabrielle Cooper played a huge role on defense, pulling in a career-high nine rebounds against the Wildcats.
