Orange Down Colgate, Move to 9-0

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 24 Syracuse women's basketball team (9-0) commanded the court on the way to a 79-39 rout of Colgate (4-5), Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome. The Orange move to 9-0 on the season, the best start for Syracuse since the 2009-10 season when the program opened the season 12-0.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Colgate drew first blood with a 3-pointer to start the game but it was all Orange after that as Syracuse did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game. Freshman Digna Strautmane kicked off scoring for the Orange with a 3-point basket just 30 seconds into the contest. The teams traded a few missed shots, but the Orange gained momentum after a Miranda Drummond layup followed by a 3-pointer by Tiana Mangakahia to take a 27-10 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
Syracuse continued to build on its first quarter success, knocking down four 3-pointers, scored by four different players, in the second quarter alone. A pair of made free throws by Mangakahia at the end of the second gave the Orange a51-16 lead heading into halftime. The Syracuse defense put on a show, limiting the Raiders to just six points in the second quarter.
The Orange defense continued to create opportunities in the third and fourth quarters, forcing nine turnovers (six steals) in the second half of the game. The Orange forced 20 turnovers on the night and finished the contest with 30 points off turnovers.
At 2:41 in the third quarter, Strautmane drove the lane for a layup to kick off a 16-0 run for the Orange, a scoring sequence that lasted for over six minutes. Redshirt senior Jasmine Nwajei notched a pair of layups and a pair of free throws for six points during run. Mangakahia capped the night with a layup as Syracuse defeated Colgate by 40 points, the largest margin of victory for the Orange this season.
OF NOTE
As a team, the Orange knocked down a season-high 13 shots from beyond the arc. Drummond and sophomore Gabrielle Cooper combined for seven of the 13 3-pointers followed by Isis Young who poured in two of her own.
Four different Syracuse players, Drummond (18), Mangakahia (13), Strautmane (12) and Young (12), recorded double-digit outings against Colgate. With 18 points on the night, Drummond tallied her ninth consecutive game scoring in double-figures.
Mangakahia dished out nine assists in the Orange's victory over Colgate, ending her streak for consecutive games with 10 or more assists at eight. She sits tied with Pacific's Tine Freil for the most consecutive games with 10+ assists in NCAA Division I women's basketball history.

"We really wanted to come in tonight and force tempo and get threes," said head coach Quentin Hillsman. "I thought we did a good job of doing that tonight. I'm just really happy with the overall effort of my team. I thought they played really hard and were very aggressive and forced tempo. We got our minutes spread around and were able to get players in the game and players out of the game. [It was] just a really clean game by our team."

Syracuse plays its final home game of the 2017 calendar year when it hosts Drexel on Saturday, Dec. 9. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. and the game will air on ACC Network Extra. It's Daughter Day in the Dome as families are invited to bring their daughters out for in-game festivities.
