Thorpe Named 2019 U.S. Indoor Lacrosse Head Coach

SPARKS, Md. – Syracuse women's lacrosse associate head coach Regy Thorpe has been named head coach of the U.S. men's team that will compete at the 2019 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Men's Indoor World Championship in British Columbia, Canada.

Thorpe joined the Syracuse staff in 2010. Since that time, Syracuse defenders have earned three IWLCA All-America honors and 11 all-conference nods. Under Thorpe's tutelage, Becca Block became the first player in program history to earn the IWLCA Defender of the Year award in 2013. She also earned IWLCA first-team All-America honors in 2012 and 2013. He has helped the Orange advance to the national semifinals six times, including the past five years, and two national final appearances.

Thorpe played at Herkimer Junior College for two years, where he earned All-America honors and was named the Defenseman of the Year in 1991. He enrolled at Syracuse and helped the Orange to the national finals in 1992. A year later, Thorpe, who served as a team captain, earned All-America honors after leading Syracuse to its fifth national title.

Following graduation, Thorpe embarked on a successful professional playing career. He played 15 seasons for the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League, helping the team to the league crown in 1997 and again in 2007 when he served as team captain. In his final season, Thorpe also was the franchise's general manager. Thorpe was a member of the Knighthawks' 10th Anniversary Team and was inducted into the team's Hall of Fame in 2012. In addition, he was inducted into the US Lacrosse Rochester Chapter Hall of Fame in 2009.
In addition, Thorpe played for the Major League Lacrosse's Rochester Rattlers from 2001-06. He served as an assistant coach for the next two seasons, helping the Rattlers to the Major League Lacrosse championship.

Thorpe was a captain for the U.S. team that won a bronze medal at the 2007 FIL indoor world championship. In addition, he helped the U.S. defeat Canada to win the 2002 Heritage Cup and beat the Iroquois Nationals to win the 2010 Bowhunter Cup.
