SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's hockey team battled back to tie Mercyhurst with less than two minutes left, but the Lakers scored a game-winning goal with 49 seconds left to win it, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Tennity.
Mercyhurst (11-17-2, 7-8-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first period on the power play. That was the lone goal in the game until the Lakers scored again midway through the third period.
Down 2-0, Syracuse (11-12-5, 10-4-2) went to work. Senior Jessica Sibley cut the lead in half with her second goal of the season late in the period. Just over a minute later, Stephanie Grossi tied the game.
Shortly after Grossi's goal, the Orange were whistled for a penalty, setting up a Mercyhurst power play. The Lakers found the back of the net with less than a minute to go and Syracuse was unable to respond.
The first period powerplay goal was the first given up by the Orange defense since Jan. 10 against Cornell.
The Orange will be back in action Feb. 17 and 18 against Rochester Institute of Technology. Friday's game will be played in Rochester while Saturday will be played in Syracuse. On Saturday, the Orange will be honoring their seniors for Senior Day at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
