Orange claim scrimmage victory over Czech Republic
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Orange came out strong on day two of the Citrus Classic, as Syracuse (7-5) defeated Lehigh (3-1), 9-2, on Saturday night at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando. 'Cuse also claimed an afternoon exhibition scrimmage victory, defeating the Czech Republic National Team 1-0.
Using a five-run second inning to start the scoring motion, Syracuse continued to tack on a run in the third and three more in the fourth for the final count of nine. The Orange allowed two runs to Lehigh, one earned and one unearned.
Syracuse outhit the Mountain Hawks 14-6 on the game, while Lehigh committed just one error to three from the Orange. AnnaMarie Gatti (2-2) was awarded with the win from the pitcher's mound, as the junior struck out three batters in four innings pitched. Sydney O'Hara was credited with her third save of the year, as the senior tallied six strike outs and no runs in three innings pitched.
Sophomore Bryce Holmgren started the second-inning scoring spree for the Orange, as she tallied an RBI single to center field to bring O'Hara in for the run.
A cluster at home plate ruled junior Olivia Martinez's bunt an RBI base hit, as Martinez reached first off a fielder's choice and Holmgren came through home plate to score.
Senior Alyssa Dewes singled to center field for the third RBI of the game, as Martinez made it to second base and sophomore Hannah Dossett came in for the run.
A double to far left field from junior Sammy Fernandez brought Dewes and Martinez in for the fourth and fifth runs of the inning.
The Orange gave up a single run to Lehigh in the bottom of the second, as an error from third base allowed the runner to make it home and prevent the shutout.
Holmgren tallied her second RBI of the night in the third inning, as the sophomore hit a double to bring O'Hara in for the run.
Syracuse was able to tack on three more runs in the fourth inning, as sophomore Alicia Hansen started the action with an RBI single to left field to bring Dewes into home plate. Back on base, Hansen advanced to second off a wild pitch while Fernandez sprinted home for the eighth run of the night.
O'Hara ended the Orange scoring for the night with an RBI single up the middle to bring Hansen in for the run.
The Mountain Hawks added one more run to the board in the fifth inning off of a wild pitch.
The Orange close out the Citrus Classic tomorrow when they play Elon at 9:30 and Morgan State at 11:45. Game links can be found below.
