
Orange Sweep on Final Day of Citrus Classic

Syracuse defeats Elon, Morgan State
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Syracuse (9-5) closed out the Citrus Classic with a pair of victories over Elon (7-6) and Morgan State (4-7). The Orange defeated the Phoenix, 3-2, before ending the game with the Bears on top, 8-0, with the mercy rule.
Syracuse outhit the Phoenix, 10-5, while outhitting the Bears, 12-1.
Senior Sydney O'Hara and junior Faith Cain led the day with three RBI apiece, while sophomore Alicia Hansen and junior Sammy Fernandez each added two.
O'Hara claimed her second win from the pitcher's circle versus Elon, as she threw six strikeouts in 11 batters faced.
Alexa Romero (4-2) claimed the shutout victory over Morgan State, as the freshman struck out 9-of-16 batters in five innings pitched, while allowing just one hit and only walking one player.
Game One
Sophomore Bryce Holmgren got the Orange on the board in the bottom of the first, as she singled to right center to bring Fernandez home for the RBI to take a 1-0 lead. The play was made with two outs on the board.
The Phoenix were able to put a run on the board in the top of the fifth to tie the game, 1-1. The Elon runner began with a double down the left field line, before advancing to third off a wild pitch. The Phoenix then tallied a single to bring the third-base runner home for the score.
Cain came through in the fifth inning for the second RBI with a single to right field, allowing enough time for O'Hara to come through home plate. The RBI marked the second of the game with two outs on the board.
Elon tied it up once again in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI single to center field.
Hansen claimed the game-deciding RBI with a sacrifice fly-out to center field to bring runner and sophomore Hannah Dossett in from third base.
Game Two
The Orange got things started early in the first inning, as Fernandez hit a lead-off double down the left field line to get on second base. O'Hara followed it up by nailing an RBI double to the back left field wall to bring Fernandez home for the score.
Romero was hot from the pitcher's circle through the first two innings, as the freshman retired four of the six batters faced.
The Orange added two more runs to the score in the top of the third, as Cain tallied a two RBI single to center field to bring in sophomore Bryce Holmgren and O'Hara.
The Bears claimed their only hit of the game in the bottom of the third frame, as Alvarez converted a bunt to reach first base.
Hansen tallied the next Orange RBI with a single down the right field line to bring senior Alyssa Dewes in for the score. O'Hara matched it with a single to second base to bring Hansen home from third base.
Syracuse used a three-run fifth inning to end the game in five innings with an 8-0 lead.
Fernandez claimed the first two RBI with a double up the middle to bring in freshman Toni Martin and Dossett. O'Hara finished up the 'Cuse scoring effort with a sacrifice fly-out to center field to bring in junior Kelsey Johnson, and cement the final 8-0 victory.
The Orange will close out tournament play next weekend at the Under Armour Invitational in Tampa, Fla. Syracuse will play Georgia State, USF, Penn and Central Michigan on Friday, March 3 and Saturday March 4.
