UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Syracuse women's hockey team ended the regular season with a 2-0 win at Penn State on Saturday afternoon at the Pegula Ice Arena.
"A good road win today to close out the regular season," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "(Abbey) Miller played well garnering the shutout and Savannah (Rennie) scored a beauty right at the end of the first period for all the scoring we needed."
Once again, freshman Savannah Rennie scored the first goal of the day for the Orange (15-12-5, 14-4-2 CHA). Rennie took the puck past a defender and was able to slot it past the Penn State goaltender. It was her third goal of the weekend against the Nittany Lions. The goal proved to be the game-winner for Syracuse, making it the fourth for Rennie this season.
Both teams were unable to find a score in the second period and most of the third period. Emily Costales put the Nittany Lions away with an empty net goal with less than a minute left to play in the game. It was her ninth goal this season.
It was the ninth shutout of the season for Syracuse, a new single-season team record. Abbey Miller secured the shutout, her eighth of the year. Miller already holds the single-season Syracuse record, but is now one shy of tying the career record. The junior also holds the College Hockey America single-season record for conference shutouts with seven.
Syracuse will be the No. 2 seed in the CHA tournament and will play its first game on Friday, March 3 in Buffalo, N.Y. at the HARBORCENTER. The Orange's game will begin 60 minutes following the conclusion of the first game of the day that begins at 4 p.m.
