Orange Third in Program of the Year Standings
3/13/2017 2:09:00 PM | Track and Field
After a historic 10th place finish at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and reaching the podium for the second year in a row at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, Syracuse currently ranks third in the USTFCCCA John McDonnell Program of the Year Standings heading into the outdoor campaign.
The award combines the overall team finishes from cross country, indoor and outdoor track at the NCAA Championships, assigning a point for every descending place in the team standings. At the end of the year, those points are added together, with the lowest score earning the USTFCCCA Program of the Year Award.
Syracuse finished third in cross country and tied for 10th in indoor track to head into the final leg of the three seasons with 13.5 points. Arkansas, which finished fifth in both seasons thus far, leads the way with 10 points. Oregon (ninth and third) has 12 points, just ahead of 'Cuse in second.
Virginia (eighth/36 points) and NC State (18th/66.5 points) are the only other ACC schools represented on the men's side.
In order to be eligible for the award a team must score points at all-three NCAA Championships. Through the cross country and indoor season, only 21 men's teams are still eligible for the award entering the outdoor track season.
Syracuse finished eighth in 2016 and 15th in 2015 in the award, both of which were program bests at the time under head coach Chris Fox.
'Cuse will begin its outdoor slate on Friday, March 31 when the sprinters head to the Florida Relays and distance runners embark on the Stanford Invitational.
