Holmgren tallies four RBI in win
ATLANTA, Ga. – In the second extra-innings game at Shirley Clements Mewborn Field, the outcome flipped for Syracuse (17-9, 3-3 ACC), as the Orange defeated Georgia Tech (9-18, 3-6 ACC), 7-5, in eight frames on Sunday afternoon. The victory sealed the series win for the Orange.
Sophomore Bryce Holmgren was responsible for the winning pair of RBI on the day, as the outfielder hit 3-of-4 on the day with four RBI and a walk.
Fellow sophomore Alicia Hansen was 2-of-4 on the game with two runs, one RBI and a walk. Junior Faith Cain was 2-of-3 with a run and an RBI.
Senior Sydney O'Hara claimed the final RBI of the day, as she was 1-for-2 from home plate with two runs, an RBI and a walk. O'Hara (5-2) claimed the win from the pitcher's circle with seven strikeouts in 15 batters faced over 3.2 innings.
Freshman Alexa Romero was the starting pitcher in today's matchup, as she tallied eight strikeouts in 20 batters faced over 4.1 innings pitched.
The Orange got on the board right away in the first inning as junior Sammy Fernandez earned the lead-off walk. A single from Hansen put two runners on base, and an RBI single from Holmgren allowed Fernandez to come through home for the score.
The Yellow Jackets used a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first frame to tie the score, 1-1, before taking the lead with an RBI single in the second inning.
With her seventh home run in the last week, O'Hara matched the homer with one of her own to start the third inning and tie the game once again, 2-2.
A single from Cain in the top of the fourth frame started the action, as a two-out RBI single from Hansen brought Cain in for the score. After O'Hara was hit by a pitch and walked, the Orange used an RBI single from Holmgren to bring in Hansen for the 4-2 lead.
Syracuse increased the lead to three runs in the top of the fifth, as Cain knocked a two-out RBI double to center field to bring junior Jessica Heese in for the fifth Orange run.
Georgia Tech added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to come within one, 5-4, before using a one-run sixth inning to tie the game, 5-5.
Neither team was able to claim the victory in regulation, as the pair headed to the eighth inning.
After a lead-off groundout, the pair of Hansen and O'Hara were walked to put two runners on base for the Orange. Hansen advanced to third off a wild pitch, while O'Hara stole second base to put both runners in scoring position.
With her third and fourth RBI of the game, Holmgren bombed a two RBI single up the middle to bring Hansen and O'Hara in for the game-winning runs.
Syracuse opens its home-field campaign on Friday, March 24 at 1 p.m. at Skytop Softball Stadium.
